We use our own code, including characters in 3 languages (english, hungarian and german). Our code is based on the tonic sol-fa-language (do re mi fa so la ti) and its referring to the relation of language and music.
The project’s initial point is the „Conet Project”; recordings of „Numbers Stations” (mysterious shortwave radio stations of uncertain origin believed to be operated by government agencies to communicate with spies „in the field”). The collection is based on the work of enthusiast Akin Fernandez. Number stations usually broadcast artificially generated mostly female voices reading streams of numbers, words, letters, using spelling alphabet, tunes or Morse code as well.
We also use sound samples from different radio amateur signals, which we collected recently with a vintage Russian military BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) radio.
Our sound samples (the sound texture of the waves of the ether) represent all possible methods of analouge frequency modulation: the continuous wave (CW is the simplest form of modulation; the output of the transmitter is switched on and off, typically to form the characters of the Morse code), amplitude modulation (in AM the strength /amplitude/ of the carrier from a transmitter is varied according to how a modulating signal varies), single sideband (in SSB transmitters, the carrier and one sideband are removed before the signal is amplified) and frequency modulation (FM). This simulated sound background of the analogue/ether confronts with the codes and the improvisation of the violin and the viola.
